How Did The First Online Shopping System Shape Ecommerce?

The development of modern e-commerce required considerable time and involved significant UK contributions, contrary to popular narratives. While the first secure online transaction occurred on August 11, 1994, digital shopping had existed for roughly a decade earlier through British innovations.

From Classifieds To Customers

Early computer networks facilitated what some identify as the first online transaction between Stanford AI Laboratory and MIT students around 1971-1972. However, limited documentation exists regarding this exchange.

A more substantial foundation emerged from Michael Aldrich, an engineer at telecommunications company Rediffusion. In 1979, he developed the “first online shopping system ever” using videotex technology underlying British teletext services.

The Route To Mrs Snowball’s House

Aldrich recognised that televisions equipped with Prestel chipsets could function as accessible shopping terminals. Major corporations like Thompson Holidays, Ford, and Peugeot-Talbot adopted the system early on.

Notably, Tesco piloted this teleshopping service in Gateshead with Mrs Jane Snowball, a 72-year-old customer. According to an ITN interview, the system “remarkably resembles an online supermarket today” in emphasising price, convenience, and usability—elements critical for contemporary e-commerce success.
